Tesla has filed plans for a proposed $10.1 billion solar manufacturing facility in Fort Bend County,

southwest of Houston. The project, operating under the name "Project Crystal Sun," could create more than 9,700 permanent full-time jobs if it is selected for Texas.

According to project filings and recent reporting, Tesla is considering a vertically integrated

manufacturing operation that could produce multiple stages of the solar supply chain, including

photovoltaic cells and completed solar modules. Commercial operations are projected to begin in the first quarter of 2029, with construction potentially beginning earlier.

The project has not yet been finalized. Tesla is seeking state and local incentives, and Texas is

competing with at least one other location for the investment.

A New Texas Manufacturing Corridor?

The timing of Project Crystal Sun is especially significant for this part of Texas.

On August 6, Governor Greg Abbott announced that SpaceX would construct its massive Terafab

semiconductor manufacturing complex in Grimes County. The first phase represents more than $16.8 billion in capital investment and is expected to create approximately 3,000 new jobs.

Terafab is intended to manufacture advanced semiconductors needed by SpaceX and Tesla for artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, robotics and future space-based computing systems.

Now, less than two weeks later, another multibillion-dollar Musk manufacturing project is being

considered for the greater Houston region.

Taken together, the two projects could represent nearly $27 billion in announced investment and more than 12,000 permanent jobs if Project Crystal Sun ultimately chooses Texas.

That does not include the thousands of additional jobs that construction companies, suppliers, logistics providers, engineering firms, housing developers, restaurants, and other businesses serving the growing workforce could create.

Grimes County Could Be at the Center of Something Much Larger

For residents and businesses in Grimes County, Montgomery County, Brazos County, and the greater Houston region, Terafab's significance may extend far beyond the semiconductor plant itself. Projects of this scale can attract supporting manufacturers, suppliers and service companies. Terafab's location between the Houston and College Station regions puts Grimes County in a potentially important position as Texas continues to attract advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence infrastructure, semiconductor production, and energy-related investment.

Tesla's proposed Project Crystal Sun further suggests that the manufacturing transformation across Texas may be just beginning.

Whether the solar factory ultimately lands in Fort Bend County remains to be seen.

Terafab is not developing in isolation. A much larger advanced-manufacturing ecosystem

is beginning to take shape across Southeast Texas.

TeraFabTexas.com will continue following Terafab, Project Crystal Sun and the companies, infrastructure

and investment developing around this rapidly changing region.
