SpaceX TeraFab Project Moves Forward in Grimes County

GRIMES COUNTY, Texas — SpaceX is moving ahead with plans for a massive semiconductor manufacturing complex in Grimes County, a project state officials say will bring one of the largest advanced-manufacturing investments ever announced for the region.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Aug. 6 that SpaceX plans to construct a vertically integrated semiconductor fabrication plant known as TeraFab in Grimes County. According to the Governor’s Office, the first phase represents more than $16.8 billion in capital investment and is expected to create 3,000 new jobs.
The planned facility is expected to encompass about 100 million square feet and combine several stages of semiconductor production under one roof. State officials said the project is intended to help SpaceX expand production of advanced chips for future company needs, including artificial-intelligence applications used on Earth and in space.
The project would add engineers, technicians, plant operators and other skilled manufacturing positions to the local workforce. The state announcement describes the development as a major expansion of SpaceX’s Texas operations, which already include the company’s Starbase operations and other manufacturing activity in the state.
The State of Texas has awarded SpaceX a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant. The project also qualifies under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology and Innovation program, commonly known as JETI, which allows qualifying large-scale projects to enter into agreements with local school districts under state law.
Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District and Iola Independent School District are among the local entities involved in the project. In the state announcement, leaders from both districts said their boards considered the potential long-term effects of the project and the opportunities it could create for students, schools and the surrounding community.
Grimes County Judge Joe Fauth III described the development as a generational change for the county. The scale of the project could affect employment, housing, roads, utilities, schools, public services and future commercial development throughout Grimes County and neighboring areas.
Local reporting has also focused on the agreements and incentives tied to the project, as well as public discussion about infrastructure, water, environmental protections, and the effects of rapid industrial growth. Those issues are expected to remain part of the community conversation as the project advances.
For residents and businesses in Grimes County, the next phase will be watching when site preparation and major construction activity begin, how quickly hiring develops, and what supporting businesses and infrastructure follow the project into the region.
TeraFabTexas.com will continue following the project, including construction activity, jobs, local government decisions, school-district agreements, infrastructure, business development and community impacts as new information becomes available.
